Hopi Ear Candling
 - also known as Thermal Auricular Therapy

A traditional healing technique of the Native American Hopi Indians, this is an effective, non-invasive means of treating a variety of ear, nose and throat conditions.  As the candles burn they create a vapour infused with therapeutic herbs.  Their tube shape creates a chimney effect, drawing away the vapour and any impurities from the ear.  Gentle heat from the candle stimulates the blood and lymph circulation, boosting the immune system and regulating pressure within the sinuses.

An ear candle is a hollow tube made from natural cotton and is impregnated with honey, sage, chamomile and beeswax.  The candles I use are made by Biosun who have been manufacturing Hopi Ear Candles for over 20 years.  The candles are a medical product consistently checked for high quality and safety standards.

After taking a medical history, you will be asked to lie on your side on a treatment couch.  When you are comfortable, the candle is lit and gently placed into the outer ear canal and you will hear a pleasant crackling sound and experience a warming sensation.  The first candle will be removed and the treatment repeated in your other ear.  The candle burns gently in around 10-12 minutes.  The candle is held in a vertical position and, at all times, my hands keep the candle steady.  My hand is always between you and the candle's lit end..  The session is completed by a gentle facial massage to aid sinus drainage.

Hopi Ear Candle treatment can be used as an alternative to syringing to remove excess wax from the ears. It is used as a means to equalise pressure in the ears and in the case of sinusitis, glue ear, colds, 'flu, catarrh, tonsilitis, headaches and migraine.  The treatment also stimulates energy flow and can help reduce ringing in the ear (tinnitus).
